Twisted pair is a wired medium. A single twisted pair consists of two copper conductors, each encased in a plastic or vinyl sheath. The copper strands are twisted around each other to increase their resistance to noise, especially crosstalk. The more tightly the pair is twisted (i.e., the more twists per meter), the more resistant the pair is to interference. Twisted pair is enclosed in a cable containing two or more pairs. Common bundles include two pair, four pair, eight pair, 25 pair, and 100 pair cables. There are two basic varieties: unshielded twisted pair (UTP) and shielded twisted pair (STP).
