The term transmission refers to the propagation of signals from one device to another through some kind of medium. The sending device is called a transmitter and the receiving device is called a receiver. Transmitters and receivers are often paired to form a bidirectional transmission system.

There are many different considerations when implementing a transmission system, two of which are listed below.

  • The scheme with which the information is formatted into an electromagnetic field that is to propagate to the receiver
  • The unique characteristics of the media in which the signal will travel (e.g., fiber, copper wire, coaxial cable, and in the special case of wireless, space itself)
