IEEE, formerly known as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, is a society of engineers that has a number of working groups developing standards. The family of LAN standards developed by the IEEE is collectively referred to as Project 802. These standards are primarily concerned with the Physical Layer and Data Link Layer of the OSI Reference Model. The IEEE is, without question, the predominant LAN standardization organization in the world. The standards originating from this organization are adopted worldwide by national and international standards organizations.
