Enterprise System Connection (ESCON) is a connection technique using fiber optics at a channel rate of 17 megabytes per second or a line rate of 200 Mbps. ESCON supports direct connection to one device controller or switched connection to multiple device controllers. Switched connectivity requires an ESCON Director, a modifiable, dynamic switch. There are two basic ESCON Director models: Model 1 is a desktop unit supporting 8-16 ports; Model 2 is a floor unit supporting 28-60 ports. In the maximum configuration (60 ports), 30 ports can be connected concurrently.

ESCON is IBM’s answer to limitations of its channel attached connectivity and protocols. (Channel attach is copper-based and limited to 125 m.)
