A private take on the metropolitan area network, the campus area network (CAN) offers connectivity over private facilities. As such security and QoS can be built in as required. The principal purpose of the CAN is to provide reliable connectivity between LANs. To perform this the CAN supports redundancy and survivability connections (via a full mesh or survivable ring).

The responsibilities of the CAN are listed below.

  • Disaster recovery and business continuation: The CAN provides the redundancy in connectivity to backup sites and services.
  • Inter-LAN communications: The CANs main role is to interconnect the LANs found in the various buildings of the enterprise. As such the CAN could be an optional portion of the architecture.
