Customer Information Control System (CICS) is the most widely used transaction program today. It is highly scalable and can support thousands of simultaneous transactions. CICS is not an individual application; it is more an application subsystem, to use IBM terminology. CICS has characteristics that enable programmers to use a common set of application programming interfaces (API). A programmer can write a transaction program, and CICS handles the multiplexing of all transactions.
